About ELiSS

ELiSS is an online journal which is regularly updated. The journal will produce thematic issues from time to time. However, its main focus is on articles/digital records and commentary submitted by all who work in HE with an interest in the social sciences. The journal uses Web 2.0 technologies and particularly encourages contributors to use such opportunities. The editorial board encourage a wide range of submissions.

The journal seeks to attract the following:

  • A critical analysis of teaching and learning which takes account of national and international developments
  • Reflections on practice which can inform and support others
  • Exemplars of innovations which are theorised and supported through scholarship
  • Engagement with theoretical debates within the social sciences which inform learning and teaching
  • Exploration of the dynamic and changing processes in teaching and learning

All such work can be submitted in written form, or through digital and video media. Use of video material is particularly encouraged.

The following types of submission are encouraged:

  • Academic papers of approximately 6,000 words
  • Practice papers of approximately 2,000 – 3,000 words
  • Reports – these may cover any of the following and other similar topics – C-SAP projects, FDTL projects, Professional Association work, conference activity

ELiSS seeks to attract submissions which appeal as far as possible to an international audience. All submissions are subject to review. Authors submitting for publication should specify which section of the journal they wish their submission to be considered for: ‘Academic Papers’, ‘Practice’, ‘Reports’.

ELiSS plans to publish 8-10 ‘Practice Papers’, 3-4 ‘Reports’ and 5-6 ‘Academic Papers’ per year. Submissions will be accepted on an ongoing basis. Responsibility for date of publication for accepted submissions lies with the chief editor.

Short Reflective 'Think-Pieces'

In the interest of stimulating debate or raising issues ELiSS would like to encourage the submission of shorter non peer refereed 'think pieces' of 500 to 1000 words. These may take the form of short essays, reflective polemic or simply be reviews of relevant publications.

Rapid Response Commentary

At the end of each paper there will be an opportunity for individuals or groups to respond to the substance contained therein. In the interest of methodological advance and critical enquiry we would like to encourage our readers to participate in this opportunity wherever possible. All responses need to adhere to the guidelines. ELiSS also provides opportunities for such contributions through the Discussion Forum.

Pre-Submission Review for Early Career Researchers

The Editorial Team would like to encourage early career researchers to submit draft papers or synposis for editorial view prior to sending for full review. In this way early career researchers can be assisted in bringing papers to publication that might otherwise have proven difficult. Researchers should follow the standard submissions process, but clearly state in their email they wish this to be considered for pre-submission review.
