Student Video: What is ...? In 2007, Yingjun Chen and Liam Allmark (students at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and University of Hull) undertook a project to examine the public perception of social science subjects. The result was an edited video containing interviews with members of the public, academics, and a range of other sources. As they describe, "attracting new students, convincing parents of the benefits of a social science degree and competing with other disciplines, courses and departments is part of the new world of the social sciences. In order to engage with this we have conducted interviews with the public to seek out their perceptions and knowledge of the disciplines of sociology, anthropology and politics. We have also conducted focus groups with students and interviews with academics and leading figures to discuss the importance and future our disciplines in this changing educational environment". |
