Re: Welcome!

I suppose it is early days for this discussion forum but I just thought I'd take the plunge and say hello.

I think the ELiSS site looks great and the addition of the calendar to inform us of C-SAP events is a great idea - I may set it as my home page!

I teach criminology and I know that puts me in the minority of C-SAP members but there are more of us than you might assume! I'm also really interested in designing assessments which involve students in  a more thoughtful (and hopefully enjoyable) way than the traditional essay/exam. I'm all for retaining the traditional but blending that with a mixed diet of assessment. My pet project at present is an international communication exchange between students in various parts of the UK and the US - you read more here if you want to - http://criminology.pbwiki.com/IEE+Project

It would be interesting to know who else is registered for this site so if you are reading this please do hit the 'reply' button and say a little about yourself.

Helen

Re: Welcome!

Dear Helen

THanks very much for taking the plunge and for being the first to post to ELiSS. This is very welcome. I am delighted to welcome the many criminologists to ELiSS and I hope you will feel this is as much your journal as anyone elses.

Like you I share an interest in assessment that blends new ideas with traditional ways of seeing things. While it is not on assessment I have been intrigued by a paper by Henry  Lewis from 1978 in Studies in HE which describes the undergraduates of that era in terms many would say characterise those of today.  So from a period of very traditional assessment  a concern that 'students were not up to it and what to do about it'. I think we are moving on hugely but unevenly. Others may disagree with this!
